Nagoya City is home to numerous cherry blossom spots, ranging from locations where you can enjoy early-blooming cherry blossoms and a succession of blooms to sites selected as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots.” Why not take a stroll along the cherry blossom-lined streets, snap some photos, and enjoy this season’s beautiful scenery in whatever way you like?
From classic spots to hidden gems, here are our recommended cherry blossom viewing spots in the city
■ The Earliest Blooming Cherry Blossoms in the City
The Okanzakura Avenue
Located along the road just outside Exit 2 of Takagake Station on the Sakura-dori Subway Line, the “Okanzakura Avenue” is a famous spot where you can enjoy cherry blossoms earlier than anywhere else in Nagoya. The avenue stretches approximately 1.4 km, featuring about 130 cherry trees—primarily Okanzakura—in full bloom.
■Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots in Nagoya
Nagoya Castle
Approximately 900 cherry trees of about 10 varieties, primarily Somei-Yoshino and weeping cherry trees, are planted here. The blooming season begins in late March with the weeping cherry trees, followed about a week later by the peak blooming period for the Somei-Yoshino. Then, around mid-April, you can see the Gyokuko cherry trees, which bear green flowers.During the “Nagoya Castle Cherry Blossom Festival,” various events are held in addition to the cherry blossom illuminations. Please enjoy the scenery created by the cherry blossoms and the castle, a sight that can only be seen during this season.
Meijo Park
Spanning approximately 80 hectares and centered around Nagoya Castle, this park offers a wonderfully open atmosphere. It is a popular spot for enjoying the Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms blooming around Ofuke Pond while viewing the castle. Flowers bloom throughout the park in all four seasons, making it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll. Please enjoy not only the cherry blossoms but also the variety of other spring flowers.
Tsuruma Park
This is one of Nagoya’s premier cherry blossom viewing spots. A grove of cherry trees lies to the northeast of the fountain tower; the area has been selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots” and is a popular destination attracting many visitors.Even after the cherry blossoms have passed their peak, the park continues to delight visitors as the main attraction shifts to 1,400 rose bushes of 140 varieties (peak season: late April to mid-June), approximately 20,000 irises of 90 varieties (peak season: early June), and 2,300 hydrangea bushes (peak season: early to late June). During the “Cherry Blossom Festival” held from mid-March, the cherry blossoms are illuminated every night.Please enjoy the cherry blossoms at night as well.
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden
A popular spot for cherry blossom viewing is the “Cherry Blossom Corridor” at the botanical garden, where 1,000 cherry trees of 100 varieties reach their peak one after another.You can see various varieties depending on the season, including early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms, thread cherry blossoms that form a tunnel with flowers blooming on their drooping branches, a “cherry blossom carpet” where fallen petals cover the path, double-flowered cherry blossoms that captivate with their vibrant petals, and Gyokko, which blooms with yellow-green flowers. At the zoo, taking photos of cherry blossoms and animals—a sight unique to this season—is very popular.From Saturday, April 4, to Sunday, April 12, the “Evening Double-Flowered Cherry Blossom Stroll” will be held. Selected areas of the botanical garden will remain open until 8:30 PM, and the Cherry Blossom Corridor will be illuminated. This year, the event area has been expanded, allowing visitors to enjoy views of Nagoya’s nightscape and the flower fields from the rooftops of the Abemaki Deck and the Flower Field Viewing Rest Area.
Additionally, in Japanese culture, there is a representative annual event called
“Hanami” (cherry blossom viewing), where people spread out a picnic blanket to enjoy food and drinks while admiring the beautiful cherry blossoms, celebrating the arrival of spring.
